Of course, many people are aware of Che Guevara due to his association with pop culture history. His iconic image adorns walls and T-shirts across the world - a symbol of rebellion and freedom for our restless youth.
In recent times, a two part film has been produced that portrays the life of Guevara. The lead star of the film is Benicio Del Toro as Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, alongside a band of Cuban exiles - led by Fidel Castro. The film begins by telling the story of how the group reach the shores of Cuba after sailing from Mexico in 1956; within two years they amass a small army and with Cuban support, topple the regime of the dictator, Fulgencio Batista. As the story goes, Guevara goes on to push his cause in both Africa and South America, which lead to his eventual capture and death in Bolivia.
The first part of 'Che' was released in cinemas on 2nd January 2009, whilst the second is due to be released on the 20th of February 2009. Therefore, once again Che will be in the spotlight, where it will hopefully provide inspiration for travellers alike to visit what historical Cuba has to offer.
Cuba is considered by many to be a truly unique destination. The largest of the Caribbean islands, it sits off the coast of Mexico amid turquoise waters under sunny skies and enjoys subtropical temperatures - two consecutive days of rain are a rarity in Cuba. With a rich colonial heritage intermingled with a vivid and exotic nightlife, Cuba merges past and present into a unique fusion of energy and history.
The capital of Havana, or La Habana, is one of the most beautiful and lively resorts in the Caribbean and has a dazzling harbour flanked by imposing ports, a rum museum, the world-famous Tropicana club and the Meseo de la Revolucion - all within its boundaries. For those of you whose interests are piqued by the story of Che, the Mudeo de la Reolucion is a must-see. Here it traces the heroic events of Cuba's struggle for independence.
What's more, the old district exudes an air of grandeur with its crumbling colonial buildings and 1950's American cars. However, if the beach is more your scene, then Varadero has plenty of idyllic white sands and crystal clear waters situated only two and a half hours from Havana.
So, whether you experience the fascinating story of Che in the cinema or decide to go that one step further, by taking Cuba holidays, you are sure to enjoy learning a lot more of about an individual who has played a historic role in society.
